‘Corncrakes on Columba’s Isle’
Search for
the elusive and skulking Corncrake, one of Scotland’s rarest
Summer migrants that retains a stronghold on the island
Walk in the
footsteps of St Columba and feel the presence of Iona’s unique
spiritual and cultural atmosphere
Unearth the
delights of the machair, one of the rarest habitats in Europe and
it’s special bird and plant communities
Discover a
landscape moulded by Lewisian Gneiss, among the oldest and hardest
rocks in Europe
Marvel at a
variety of Arctic-bound migratory waders that refuel at The Bay at
the Back of the Ocean in Spring
We meet at 10.15
am at the ferry terminal at Fionnphort and leave Iona at approximately
4.15 pm. The walk is no longer than 3 miles on flat easy terrain,
however stout walking shoes or walking boots are essential. You will
also require waterproofs and a small rucksack in which to carry your
packed lunch and personal items. We highly recommend that you bring
binoculars.
The cost of your
Corncrake Walk is £45.00 per person which includes return ferry fare
to Iona, the renowned home-made ‘Mull Magic’ lunch, with soup, filled
roll, fruit and cake made with the best local ingredients and the
services of an experienced Walk Leader and Wildlife Expert.
Alternatively you
can be collected from your hotel or bed & breakfast base in Tobermory
or Salen and be transported to Iona via some of the most stunningly
beautiful scenery in Scotland, with expert commentary en route.
This service is free of charge but places are limited so early booking
is advisable.
