'Isle of Mull'

In recent decades, the Isle of Mull has earned an enviable reputation as the premier wildlife tourism destination in the British Isles. Nowadays, thousands of birdwatchers and wildlife enthusiasts flock to the island every year, hoping to catch a glimpse of Mull’s celebrated birds and animals.

The Isle of Mull boasts a rich biodiversity that ranges from a myriad of fungi to apex predators, like White-tailed Eagles, otters, Minke Whales and Basking Sharks. With the greatest concentration of these awe-inspiring and majestic birds anywhere in Europe, the Isle of Mull supports a healthy population of eagles. Over 30 pairs of Golden Eagles breed on the island, as well as up to 12 pairs of the White-tailed Eagle.

The Isle of Mull represents one of the best places in Britain to spot the elusive Eurasian Otter. These shy and easily disturbed mammals are at home in the seaweed-fringed shallows of the island’s sea lochs and will often reward the visitor’s patience with good views. Red Deer roam the hills and moors of the Isle of Mull throughout the year, but are at their most obvious during the rutting season in Autumn, when the sound of roaring stags carries long into the night on the island.

The seas around Mull are rich in marine life, being one of the most important habitats for whales and dolphins in Europe. Minke Whale are the most commonly encountered whales, while both Bottlenose and Common Dolphins may be seen in season. Changes in sea temperature and plankton availability has resulted in an increase in sightings of the Basking Shark, frequently spotted in waters around Mull recently.

The Isle of Mull boasts a variety of ancient and semi-natural woodland, as well as recently planted conifer stands. The mild, damp climate and clean, unpolluted air on the Isle of Mull provides ideal conditions for a tremendous variety of wild flowers, ferns, mosses and liverworts, lichens and fungi to thrive.

The landscapes and seascapes of the Isle of Mull are both breathtaking and exhilarating and among the most beautiful in the British Isles. The island’s weather is capricious in nature, with the changing light affording photographers a fantastic opportunity to capture the local scenery in all of its moods.

A walk with Mull Magic offers an ideal opportunity to explore your interests further in an informative, yet fun way, where you will be escorted to out of the way locations, off the beaten track, for a truly life-affirming experience.
