Dun Ara
Fort - 2 miles, 75 minutes, Grading Easy, OS
Map Explorer 374
Follow
the B8073 from Tobermory and just outside of the
town turn right - signposted Glengorm. Park by
the coffee shop at Glengorm Castle and walk over
the bridge opposite it. Follow the farm track
which goes out in front of the castle. The track
goes to the right and a detour can be made down
the bank to have a closer look at the standing
stones. Continue on the track until it curves
round to the left and Dun Ara can be seen on the
top of the second crag. The ascent is easy from
the south-east side and the castle's foundations
are clearly visible. On a clear day there are
views out to Coll and the Uists. Please keep
dogs on a lead at all times.

Treshnish
- 6 miles, 220 minutes, Grading Moderate,
some challenging stretches (steep drops and narrow cliff paths) OS Map
Explorer 374
Park
in the quarry on the B8073 just past the drive
to Treshnish Farm. The track from Ensay leads to
Haunn near Treshnish Point from which there are
views across Loch Tuath to the islands of Cairn
na Burgh Beg, Cairn na Burgh Mor, Fladda, Lunga
and Dutchman's Cap. Here go through a gate and
follow a path down to the first of two Iron Age
forts. A raised beach under the cliffs to the
south leads to a waterfall where a path goes up
to the deserted villages of Crakaig and Glac
Gugairidh, across the moorland and then to the
old school house, a short distance from the
start of the walk.
Please
keep your dog on a lead at all times.
-
Crater Loch
- 2 miles, 80 minutes, Grading Moderate (can be
very wet under foot) OS Map Explorer 374
This
is a highly recommended short walk but muddy in
parts. Follow
the B8073 from Tobermory along Mishnish Lochs
for about 3 miles until you
come to a ruined cottage where there is room to
park (if these places are taken there will be
room in the quarry just before the cottage). Go
over a stile and follow the track up behind the
cottage and head for the gate. Go through the
gate and keep on the track where you are
constantly in view of the summit of the volcanic
hill, S'Airde Beinn with it's hidden crater
loch. Once on the top make a circuit of the rim
of the crater to enjoy the most spectacular
views in the North of Mull. To the east there
are views of Tobermory Bay and Morvern and on a
fine day you can see west to the Isle of Coll
and the Small Isles. Return the same way.

Ben More
- 6 miles, 300 minutes, Grading Hard, OS Map
Explorer 375
This
is NOT a recommended walk for novices but
suitable for experienced hill climbers only. Follow
the B8035 from Salen and park at Dhiseig on the
shores of Loch Na Keal. It is safe to park on
the grassy area between the road and the shore.
This is the easiest route up the mountain,
Mull's only Munro at 3169 feet, but be aware
that this volcanic mountain is magnetic and so
compasses are unreliable and make an accurate
reading impossible. The track goes up
the hill past the farm house and follows the
course of the burn, the Abhainn Dhiseig. The
path crosses the burn and there is a very
steep ascent onto the summit ridge.
From here there is a wide track up to the summit
cairn and if you are lucky you can see Ireland,
the Outer Hebrides and Ben Nevis. Return
the same way.

Isle of Ulva
- 2miles - 10 miles +, 60 minutes - all day
walk, Grading Easy - Moderate, OS Map Explorer
374
Park
at Ulva Ferry on the minor road off the B8073
which goes down the side of the school. It is a
2 minute ferry crossing over to Ulva. A
footpath waymarked 'All Routes' leads from the
Boathouse and climbs through the woodland
behind. There are well sign posted boards that
lead to a variety of walks on the island. All
are fully described in a booklet that can be
purchased from the Boathouse and range in
distance from a couple of miles to over 10
miles. Many visitors looking for a longer walk
beyond the woods around Ulva House will find
themselves directed to the old townships of
Ormaig, Cragaig and Kilvekewen with their
derelict croft houses, and ancient standing
stones.
-
Mackinnon's
Cave - 2 miles, 90 minutes, Grading
Moderate, (some clambering over boulders) OS Map
Explorer 375
Check tide times before commencing this
walk as the cave is only accessible
below low tide and don't forget a torch to
explore the cave. The starting
point of the walk is on the farm road to
Balmeanach on the B8035 just beyond the
Gribun rocks. Park just before the cattle
grid and go through the gate by the farm
outbuildings and follow the fence to the
top of the cliffs. Dogs must be kept on a
lead. A winding path leads downwards and a
short walk along the coast brings you to the cave. Just before
the cave there is a waterfall and then
some large rocks washed by the tide at the
mouth of the cave, which have to be
scrambled over.
-
Speinne Mor
- 5 miles, 180 minutes, Grading Moderate,
OS Map Explorer 374
The
starting point for the walk up Speinne Mor is a parking place on the B8073
Tobermory to Dervaig road at the west end of
Loch Carnain an Amais. Take the path which
starts behind the larger quarry and goes over a
stile. At a fork keep to the right hand path
which is little more than a deer track in
places. Carry on up the ridge and the old fence
posts will come into sight. Follow the fence
posts until Lochan Dearg comes into view on the
right. From here you can make your way to the
rounded summit of Speinne Mor and enjoy
breathtaking views of Tobermory, Ben More, Coll
and the Small Isles. Return the same way.
-
Langamull with
short detour to Kildavie - 4 miles, 90 minutes,
Grading Easy, OS Map Explorer 374
This short easy recommended walk to
Langamull has been
waymarked by the Forest Enterprise. The
walk starts at the car park on the Dervaig
to Calgary road. There is a good track
through the forest and as the track comes
out of the woodland turn right for the
short walk through the forest to the
ruined township of Kildavie. Retrace the
route back to the cottage and turn right
to follow the path that slopes down to the
beach. There are fabulous views out to
Coll and and
this is a great spot for a picnic.
-
Calgary Bay
- 2 miles, 60
minutes, Grading Easy, OS Map Explorer 374
Calgary
Bay is accessed by the winding B8073 road from
Tobermory via Dervaig. There is a car park and
picnic area on the machair, the area of dunes
and fertile grassland backing onto the beach
which is listed in the top 20 beaches in the
country. Go through the gate and take the
path that heads west along the shore to the old
pier. Note the ruin of the old pier house, set
into what looks like a wall but is actually a
volcanic dyke. Return the same way and go up to
the Calgary Hotel where the Calgary Art in
Nature woodland sculpture walk is free of
charge. There is a tearoom and art gallery with
many items for sale.
